How to Become an MOT Tester in 3 Simple Steps
If you’re ready to start a career as an MOT Tester, here’s what you need to know! Follow these three steps to get qualified:
1. Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, your current role should include inspecting, maintaining, and repairing light vehicles. You’ll need to be able to work independently, hold a full-time position, and have at least 4 years of hands-on experience in vehicle servicing, inspection, and system diagnostics. If you don’t yet meet these criteria, don’t worry—our Accredited Light Vehicle Inspection route is designed to help you qualify.
2. Complete the Level 2 Award in MOT Testing
Our Level 2 Award in MOT Testing course gives you in-depth knowledge of the MOT Tester’s Manual and MOT systems. Over three days of focused training, you’ll learn directly from experienced assessors who bring insights from senior roles across the automotive industry. The course concludes with theory and practical exams, and you’ll train in our purpose-built facility equipped with the latest connected diagnostic tools.
3. Take the Final VT8 Test
Once you complete your training, it’s time for the final VT8 test, observed by a DVSA assessor. You’ll have the advantage of taking this assessment in a familiar environment, with your trainer available to support you as needed. Congratulations—you’re now a Nominated Tester! Don’t forget to complete your annual training and explore our other courses to continue advancing your career.

Your job role should involve the inspection, maintenance and repair of light vehicles. You must be able to work unsupervised and should be in full-time employment. In addition, you need at least 4 years of experience. In other words,you must be familiar with the techniques for vehicle servicing, inspection and system diagnosis.If you don’t have this qualification, you can still become an MOT Tester,have a look at our IMI Accreditation Light Vehicle Inspection route.

The Level 2 Award in MOT Testing course will cover the MOT Testers Manual and MOT systems. The course consists of 3-days of on-site training, finishing with your theory and practical exam. Our assessors have experience in a variety of senior automotive roles. Therefore they know about perfecting the MOT routine. Whatsmore, you will be working in our purpose-built training facility with all the latest connected equipment.

Once you pass the second stage you can take your final VT8 under DVSA observation. You will have the advantage of performing this test in a familiar environment with your trainer on-site for support!
